In April 2025, African Women Rights Advocates (AWRA), Belt of Somali Women, and The Girl Generation (TGG) co-hosted a landmark virtual convening titled “Power in Partnership: Uniting to End FGM/C Across Somali Communities.” This 90-minute webinar brought together over 200 participants from across the Horn of Africa and the global Somali diaspora, reaffirming a collective commitment to end Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) through survivor-led, community-rooted, and cross-border collaboration.
FGM/C remains a pervasive human rights violation, particularly within Somali communities globally. Recognizing that sustainable change must be locally led and globally supported, this conversation was designed to spotlight what works—and who leads —in the fight to end FGM/C. The dialogue emphasized the importance of shifting narratives, centering survivor voices, and strengthening partnerships that span generations, geographies, and
sectors.
Key Outcomes
- Amplified visibility of Somali-led and survivor-driven anti-FGM/C efforts
- Strengthened transnational solidarity through dialogue and shared strategies
- Deepened understanding of how language can both harm and heal
- Fostered new relationships and catalyzed interest in forming a sustained cross-border network
