Julia Cheprowas is a survivor, community advocate, and grassroots leader working across Laikipia County and Pokot community to protect women and girls from FGM, child marriage, and gender-based violence. Through her work with Ripote Initiative CBO and alongside networks such as Sister to Sister Initiative and the Indigenous Women Council, she continues to create spaces where women and girls can find safety, healing, and hope. Her advocacy is deeply personal. As a survivor herself, Julia understands the pain, silence, and fear many girls experience, and she has transformed that experience into a source of strength and leadership. within her community. Guided by compassion and persistence, she works closely with women, girls, elders, local leaders, and survivors to challenge harmful practices while building understanding and collective responsibility for change.
Beyond her advocacy work, Julia is also a farmer, an opinion leader, and a leader of twelve women’s groups that together reach hundreds of women across her community. Through mentorship programs, community dialogues, and awareness forums, she helps women and girls gain confidence, knowledge, and the courage to speak for themselves. Her work creates safe spaces where survivors can share their stories openly and where communities can begin difficult but necessary conversations about dignity, protection, and equality. One of the moments that continues to shape Julia’s journey was helping rescue a young girl who was about to undergo FGM. Through patient dialogue with the family and community elders, the girl was protected and able to return to school. Today, she is safe and hopeful about her future. For Julia, moments like these are reminders that this work is not only about awareness, but about restoring hope and protecting futures that might otherwise be lost.
What makes Julia’s approach unique is her commitment to community led change. Rather than confronting communities from the outside, she works alongside them, respecting cultural identity while challenging practices that harm women and girls. By combining mentorship, rescue, advocacy, and long term follow up support, she helps communities take ownership of transformation from within. Her vision is rooted in a future where girls remain in school, women live free from violence, and communities choose dignity, equality, and protection over harmful traditions. Through Sister to Sister Initiative, Julia hopes to strengthen collaboration, expand opportunities for grassroots women leaders, and build stronger systems of support that allow local organizations like Ripote Initiative CBO to reach even more girls and families. Driven by resilience, courage, and compassion, Julia continues to stand as both a voice for survivors and a bridge toward healing and lasting community change.
I am the voice of the unheard, the strength of the vulnerable, and the hope that turns pain into protection and change.
