African Women Rights Advocates (AWRA) 16 Days of Activism 2024 – West Pokot County Engagement Report
As part of the 2024 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, African Women Rights Advocates (AWRA), in partnership with I-Rep Foundation and the Anti-FGM Board Kenya, led a series of community-centered engagements in West Pokot County to strengthen efforts to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The project brought together local leaders, women, youth, police, elders, and religious figures through forums, training, and dialogues aimed at raising awareness, building capacity, and encouraging community-driven solutions. Activities included training administrative police on FGM laws, mobilizing elders and Nyumba Kumi leaders as cultural gatekeepers, empowering women’s groups through economic initiatives, and sensitizing prison inmates and wardens on GBV prevention. These interventions resulted in tangible progress, including a reported 25% reduction in FGM cases, increased community vigilance, and strengthened cross-sector collaboration to protect girls’ rights and advance gender equality.
