Katra Mauid Haji is a grassroots advocate and human rights defender from the Borana community in <\/span>Wajir County, working at the forefront of women\u2019s rights, peacebuilding, and community <\/span>empowerment. She is part of Women Organizing Women Network, a women led movement dedicated <\/span>to advancing gender equality, protecting human rights, and strengthening the leadership and wellbeing <\/span>of women and girls in marginalized communities. Her work is further connected to key platforms <\/span>including the County Gender Technical Working Group, County Steering Group and the Peace Actors <\/span>Forum.<\/span><\/p>

Her journey into advocacy began in 2014 during a period of deep insecurity in Wajir, marked by <\/span>recurring clan conflict, displacement, and widespread gender-based violence. Witnessing women and <\/span>families suffer in silence while their voices were excluded from peace processes pushed her and other <\/span>women to organize and step forward. What started as a small group of concerned women has since <\/span>grown into a sustained movement rooted in courage, solidarity, and the belief that communities can <\/span>only heal when women are included in shaping solutions. <\/span>Katra\u2019s work focuses on mobilizing women and girls to participate in leadership, speak out against <\/span>injustice, and access opportunities for safety, dignity, and economic empowerment. Through advocacy, <\/span>mentorship, and community dialogue, she supports women to understand their rights and take active <\/span>roles in decision making processes that affect their lives. She also works closely with youth, elders, men, <\/span>and local authorities to strengthen peacebuilding efforts and build social cohesion in conflict affected <\/span>areas.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Over the years, she has contributed to peace dialogues that bring together divided communities, <\/span>supported mentorship programs for women and girls, and led awareness campaigns on gender-based <\/span>violence and human rights. Her work has also included livelihood support initiatives aimed at <\/span>strengthening household resilience and improving women\u2019s economic independence. Collectively, these <\/span>efforts have reached thousands of people across Wajir County, creating ripple effects of awareness, <\/span>leadership, and community transformation. One of the defining moments of her work came during a <\/span>period of heightened clan tension when women, previously excluded from peace processes, were finally <\/span>given space to share their experiences. Their testimonies shifted the conversation from blame to shared <\/span>responsibility, leading to a breakthrough agreement for deescalation and renewed dialogue. <\/span><\/p>

For Katra, <\/span>this moment reaffirmed her belief that when women are included, they do not only participate in peace, <\/span>they actively help build it. <\/span>Her approach is deeply community driven and participatory. She believes that sustainable change <\/span>happens when solutions are designed and owned by the community itself. Through dialogue forums, <\/span>training sessions, mentorship, and advocacy campaigns, she works to strengthen trust, shift attitudes, <\/span>and promote collective responsibility for addressing gender-based violence, exclusion, and inequality. <\/span>She also emphasizes collaboration with local institutions to ensure survivors can access timely support <\/span>and protection.<\/span><\/p>

At the heart of her work is a commitment to dignity, inclusion, integrity, and solidarity. She values <\/span>creating safe spaces where women can speak freely, heal, and grow, while also ensuring that even the <\/span>most marginalized voices are included in decision making. Her vision for sisterhood is rooted in mutual <\/span>support and collective strength, women standing with one another not only in moments of struggle, but <\/span>also in leadership and progress.<\/span><\/p>

Through the Sister-to-Sister Initiative, Katra envisions deeper peer support systems that strengthen <\/span>women\u2019s confidence, leadership, and access to opportunities. She believes that when women support <\/span>each other directly at the grassroots level, change becomes more sustainable, localized, and powerful. <\/span>Her vision for the future is a society where women and girls live free from violence and inequality, <\/span>where they are fully included in leadership, and where communities are built on dignity, peace, and <\/span>shared responsibility. She continues to work toward a future where every girl can access education, <\/span>every woman can lead without barriers, and communities thrive through unity rather than division.<\/span><\/p>
