Sally Jepchumba is a grassroots advocate, survivor, mentor, and community leader from Elgeyo <\/span>Marakwet County, working through Light a Girl Initiative CBO and affiliated with networks including the <\/span>Survivors of FGM Network in Kenya, CSO networks on Ending FGM, and the Sister to Sister Movement. <\/span>She is a passionate defender of girls\u2019 rights and wellbeing, dedicated to ending FGM, child marriage, and <\/span>gender-based violence while advancing girls\u2019 education, mental health, and sexual and reproductive <\/span>health and rights.<\/span><\/p>

Her journey into advocacy is deeply personal. At the age of 11, Sally underwent FGM without fully <\/span>understanding what it meant, an experience that left lasting emotional pain and silence. Growing up in a <\/span>context where silence around such practices was expected, she later made a deliberate choice to break <\/span>that silence. Turning her lived experience into purpose, she committed herself to ensuring that no other <\/span>girl in her community would go through what she endured. Today, she stands as a voice for girls who are <\/span>still navigating the same fears, pressures, and cultural expectations she once faced.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Through Light a Girl Initiative, Sally leads programs that combine advocacy, SRHR education, <\/span>mentorship, and community engagement. She works directly with school going girls through life skills <\/span>training, girls\u2019 clubs, and empowerment sessions that build confidence and informed decision making. <\/span>She also engages parents, youth, religious leaders, and community elders in dialogue to challenge <\/span>harmful norms and promote the protection of girls. In addition, she supports survivor storytelling and <\/span>creates safe spaces where girls can share experiences, heal, and access psychosocial support.<\/span><\/p>

Over the years, Sally\u2019s work has reached more than 7,000 people through school trainings, community <\/span>dialogues, girls\u2019 forums during school holidays, and engagement with local leaders and teachers. One of <\/span>her most defining impacts came when a young girl she mentored expressed how the training gave her <\/span>confidence, role models, and renewed motivation to stay in school and work hard for her future. That <\/span>moment reaffirmed for Sally that even small interventions can create lasting transformation in a girl\u2019s <\/span>life. Despite her impact, Sally has faced significant challenges, including deep cultural resistance, fear <\/span>based beliefs surrounding FGM, limited resources, and lack of consistent support for grassroots <\/span>advocacy work. She has also navigated stigma tied to speaking out as a survivor and the difficulty of <\/span>operating in environments where silence is often enforced. Nevertheless, she continues to push forward <\/span>with courage, building trust within communities and working collaboratively with local leaders, teachers, <\/span>and institutions to create change.<\/span><\/p>

Her approach is grounded in lived experience, which allows her to connect deeply with girls and <\/span>communities and build trust in sensitive conversations. She combines advocacy with practical education, <\/span>mentorship, and community dialogue, ensuring that awareness is matched with real tools for change. <\/span>She also emphasizes peer learning, encouraging girls to become advocates within their own spaces, <\/span>multiplying impact from within the community.<\/span><\/p>

Sally defines sisterhood as a powerful bond of solidarity where women and girls uplift, protect, and <\/span>strengthen one another. For her, sisterhood is both healing and action, a collective force that transforms <\/span>silence into voice and isolation into shared strength. Through the Sister to Sister Initiative, she sees an <\/span>opportunity to strengthen grassroots visibility, access mentorship and learning, and build collective <\/span>power among women leaders working at the frontline of change.<\/span><\/p>

She strongly believes that real change begins at the grassroots and calls for greater investment in <\/span>frontline advocates who are closest to the realities of the communities they serve. She also emphasizes <\/span>the need for governments and institutions to move beyond policy creation into real, consistent <\/span>implementation that protects girls in practical, meaningful ways.<\/span><\/p>

Sally envisions a future where girls in her community are free from harmful practices, fully educated, <\/span>and able to exercise complete agency over their lives and bodies. A future where women and girls stand <\/span>equally with men in opportunity, dignity, and leadership, and where communities actively protect and <\/span>empower their daughters.<\/span><\/p>
