Neema Kimutai is a passionate grassroots advocate and community leader from Elgeyo Marakwet <\/span>County, working through Neema Foundation CBO and affiliated with the Youth Anti-FGM Network. Her <\/span>work is dedicated to advancing the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of women and girls, with a strong focus <\/span>on ending FGM, child marriage, and gender-based violence while strengthening youth participation in <\/span>community-led change.<\/span><\/p>

Her journey into advocacy is rooted in lived community experience. Growing up, Neema witnessed how <\/span>young people in her community were often excluded from decisions that directly affected their lives, <\/span>despite having ideas, energy, and potential. This gap between lived reality and decision making spaces <\/span>inspired her to step forward and create platforms where youth voices could be heard, respected, and <\/span>integrated into community solutions. It also strengthened her commitment to advocating for women, <\/span>girls, and young people at the grassroots level.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Through her work, Neema leads community dialogues, school outreach programs, mentorship <\/span>initiatives, and awareness campaigns that address harmful practices such as FGM while promoting <\/span>gender equality and protection for girls. She also engages men and boys as key allies in driving change <\/span>and creates safe spaces where young people can learn, speak openly, and take leadership roles in <\/span>shaping their communities. <\/span><\/p>

Her approach is intentionally youth led, ensuring that young people are not <\/span>just participants but active drivers of transformation.<\/span><\/p>

One of her most defining impacts came through the Komesha FGM Sasa initiative, where she helped <\/span>engage men as champions of change. What began with hesitation eventually transformed into active <\/span>male leadership against FGM, shifting long-standing perceptions that framed it as solely a women\u2019s <\/span>issue. Seeing men take ownership, educate others, and continue advocating for change remains one of <\/span>the most powerful validations of her work and the importance of inclusive community engagement.<\/span><\/p>

Neema has also contributed to the creation of Reflect Circles for women, a safe spaces where women <\/span>share experiences, heal, and collectively challenge harmful norms. In addition, she facilitates <\/span>intergenerational dialogues that bring together elders, parents, and youth to openly discuss cultural <\/span>practices and co-create alternative, positive norms. Through these efforts, she has reached <\/span>approximately 5,000 people across her community, building awareness, trust, and collective <\/span>responsibility for change.<\/span><\/p>

Despite her impact, she has faced challenges including cultural resistance, limited resources, and <\/span>difficulties in sustaining youth engagement due to trust gaps and awareness barriers. However, she <\/span>continues to respond with persistence, empathy, and a strong belief in community ownership of change. <\/span>Her work is grounded in inclusivity, integrity, accountability, compassion, and courage. <\/span><\/p>

Neema believes that real transformation happens when communities lead their own change processes. <\/span>Her approach combines advocacy, mentorship, and dialogue with practical, community driven solutions <\/span>that build ownership and sustainability. She works closely with local leaders, teachers, and men <\/span>champions to ensure that change is not only spoken about but lived within households and community <\/span>systems.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

For Neema, sisterhood is about standing together in strength and vulnerability, creating safe spaces <\/span>where women and girls can share openly without fear of judgment. Through the Sister to Sister <\/span>Initiative, she envisions deeper solidarity, mentorship, and collective action that empowers women to <\/span>move from shared experiences into shared leadership and lasting change.<\/span><\/p>

She strongly believes that grassroots communities already hold the solutions to the challenges they face <\/span>and calls for greater investment in local, youth led, and community driven initiatives. Her vision is a <\/span>future where girls are free from violence and harmful practices, where they can complete their <\/span>education and pursue their dreams without limitation, and where women are fully represented in <\/span>leadership and decision making spaces. Neema\u2019s long term goal is to scale her advocacy into a <\/span>sustainable platform that strengthens grassroots movements, influences policy, and builds lasting <\/span>protection systems for women and girls.
