Christine Naimutie Lemiso is a psychologist, mental health and sexual and reproductive health advocate, and founder of Mind Haven Initiative. She works at the intersection of mental health, girls’ education, gender equality, and human rights, supporting adolescent girls, young women, and marginalized communities to live healthier, safer, and more empowered lives. Her work is driven by purpose, compassion, and the belief that every girl deserves the opportunity to decide her own future.<\/span><\/p>

Growing up and working within the Maasai community, Christine witnessed many struggles that often went unseen and unspoken. Girls faced barriers to education, harmful cultural practices, gender-based violence, and limited access to information and support. One case, however, changed everything for her. An eight-year-old girl was defiled by her own father. Watching the child’s pain and the silence surrounding the abuse made Christine realise she could no longer stand by. That experience led her to pursue psychology and dedicate her life to creating safe spaces where girls and women can heal, speak openly, and reclaim their lives<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Through Mind Haven Initiative, Christine works closely with adolescent girls, young women, caregivers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to address mental health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, child marriage, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and girls’ education. She believes lasting change begins when communities are willing to have the difficult conversations that have been ignored for far too long.<\/span><\/p>

Her work combines grassroots action with advocacy. She leads awareness campaigns on mental health, reproductive health, and human rights, conducts school and camp-based outreach programmes, mentors girls and young women, supports survivors through direct case management, links vulnerable individuals to justice and essential services, and ensures community voices are represented in policy conversations. Whether she is in a classroom, a community gathering, or an online platform, Christine believes in meeting people where they are and walking with them until they regain hope and confidence.<\/span><\/p>

Over the years, her work has directly reached more than 5,000 students through schools and camps, engaged approximately 3,000 community members through outreach activities, and extended to over 6,800 people through digital advocacy. Altogether, she estimates that more than 15,000 people have benefited directly and indirectly from her work.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Among her key achievements is facilitating the rescue of more than 50 girls from harmful situations and connecting them to safety, justice, education, and recovery. She has also led education and awareness programmes on mental health and sexual and reproductive health, while continuously advocating for girls’ right to education and equal opportunities.<\/span><\/p>

One story continues to remind Christine why this work matters. She supported an eight-year-old girl who had been defiled by her own father, walking with her through the trauma, the legal process, and the uncertainty that followed. Today, justice has been served, her father is in prison, and the girl is back in school, safe and supported. For Christine, that experience reinforced that advocacy is not only about campaigns or policy discussions; it is about standing beside someone when they have no one else and refusing to give up until they are safe and their future is protected.<\/span><\/p>

The journey has not been without challenges. Conversations around mental health, SRHR, and gender equality are still surrounded by stigma in many communities. Building trust takes time, and cultural barriers, limited resources, and the emotional weight of supporting survivors can be overwhelming. Yet these challenges have strengthened Christine’s resilience and deepened her commitment to the communities she serves.<\/span><\/p>

What makes her approach different is that she is not working from the outside looking in. She is part of the communities she serves and has built trust through years of consistent presence. She believes awareness alone is not enough. Her work goes beyond education by providing direct intervention, legal support, mentorship, psychosocial care, and long-term follow-up. She also understands that mental health, reproductive health, and human rights cannot be separated because they shape people’s lives every day.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Christine’s work is guided by dignity, justice, courage, compassion, and empowerment. She believes every person deserves to be treated with humanity and that no child should ever suffer in silence. To her, sisterhood means women and girls standing together in empathy, solidarity, and mutual support, creating spaces where everyone is encouraged to grow without fear or judgment.<\/span><\/p>

She believes the Sister to Sister Initiative would strengthen her work by connecting her with other women leaders and advocates who understand both the joys and challenges of grassroots work. She sees it as an opportunity to learn, collaborate, strengthen psychosocial support for women human rights defenders, and amplify conversations around mental health, girls’ education, and gender equality.<\/span><\/p>

Speaking about her community, Christine describes the Maasai as a people rich in culture, resilience, storytelling, and unity. While gender inequality and harmful practices continue to affect some girls and women, she believes these challenges do not define the Maasai community. She is proud to belong to a generation that is preserving culture while creating space for girls and women to learn, lead, and thrive.<\/span><\/p>

Looking ahead, Christine dreams of a future where every girl knows her life belongs to her. She hopes to establish a fully resourced centre that brings together grassroots advocacy, rescue and rehabilitation, mental health support, and girls’ education under one roof. She also wants to influence policy at national and international levels so that the realities of grassroots communities help shape the decisions that affect them.<\/span><\/p>
