Seleyian Partoip is a grassroots feminist, girls’ rights advocate, and community leader from Narok County. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Murua Girl Child Education Program, where she works at the intersection of culture, education, climate justice, and women’s empowerment. Through her leadership, she supports indigenous pastoralist girls and communities to challenge harmful practices while expanding opportunities for education, leadership, and social transformation.<\/span><\/p>

Seleyian describes herself as a visionary leader driven by purpose and hope. She believes that every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, lead, and shape her own future regardless of where she is born. Her work is grounded in resilience, integrity, collaboration, and a deep belief that lasting change begins when communities themselves become the drivers of transformation.<\/span><\/p>

Her journey into advocacy began after spending eleven years working in Nairobi as a social worker within HIV care programmes. Although she valued that work, everything changed when her first cousin was forced out of school because of an early pregnancy. Helping her successfully return to school became a defining moment. Seeing how one intervention could completely change a young girl’s future inspired Seleyian to dedicate her life to ensuring that more girls in her community would have the same opportunity to continue their education and realise their potential.<\/span><\/p>

Today, Seleyian works on issues of FGM, child marriage, gender-based violence, girls’ education, climate justice, women’s empowerment, and mental health. Her work focuses on strengthening indigenous communities by creating opportunities for girls to remain in school, develop leadership skills, and participate confidently in shaping their own futures. She also works with youth leaders, parents, community elders, and local organisations to promote community ownership of change.<\/span><\/p>

Over the years, Seleyian has directly impacted approximately 15,000 girls and reached more than 40,000 community members. She has coordinated youth-led advocacy campaigns on FGM and sexual and reproductive health and rights, expanded the Youth Anti-FGM Network through the launch of new chapters, mentored more than 500 young people and over 150 youth advocates, contributed to the review of the Prohibition of FGM Act, and supported programmes that reached thousands of people through both community engagement and digital advocacy.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

One milestone that continues to affirm her work was receiving three prestigious awards in 2023: the Zuri Awards, the East African Breweries Sustainability Award, and the Metis Collaboration Award. For Seleyian, these recognitions were not simply personal achievements they represented the growing recognition of grassroots leadership and the importance of investing in community-driven solutions that place girls and women at the centre of change.<\/span><\/p>

Like many grassroots advocates, Seleyian’s journey has not been easy. She has experienced financial hardship, post-traumatic stress, burnout, verbal attacks, and online abuse while advocating against deeply rooted harmful practices. Yet rather than discouraging her, these experiences have strengthened her determination to continue creating opportunities for girls who often face multiple layers of discrimination and exclusion.<\/span><\/p>

What makes Seleyian’s approach unique is her investment in community champions. Rather than leading every initiative herself, she mentors young people to become advocates within their own communities. Many of these champions have gone on to establish their own grassroots movements, creating a ripple effect of locally led leadership and sustainable social change.<\/span><\/p>

Her work is guided by the values of empowerment, integrity, resilience, and collaboration. She believes meaningful transformation happens when communities are trusted to lead, young people are equipped with knowledge and confidence, and women and girls are recognised as leaders rather than beneficiaries. To her, sisterhood means having a reliable support system where women uplift one another, share experiences, and grow stronger together.<\/span><\/p>

Seleyian sees the Sister to Sister Initiative as an important platform for strengthening grassroots leadership through capacity building, wellness support, and resource mobilisation. Speaking about the Maasai community, Seleyian acknowledges that many outsiders often perceive the community as na\u00efve or resistant to change. She instead describes a people with a rich cultural identity rooted in expression, resilience, dignity, and respect. While harmful practices still exist, she believes communities are increasingly embracing positive change while preserving the values that strengthen their identity.<\/span><\/p>

Looking ahead, Seleyian dreams of a future where girls and women live in safe environments free from barriers to education, leadership, and self-development. She hopes to build a global philanthropic organisation that continues investing in girls, women, and indigenous communities while inspiring the next generation of grassroots leaders.<\/span><\/p>
